File Extensions Explorer

This site is about simple but quite useful tool that I created on my spare time.

My goal when writing this tool was learning about how file associations mechanisms work in Windows and at the same time refresh my MFC knowledge.

Functionality of File Extension Explorer is very simple. It collects information about all file associations from your registry and displays it to you in an easy to navigate form.

Technically this tool is similar to ASSOC cmd prompt command but it gives you much more detailed information which includes:

  • File Extension
  • Windows Object associated with it
  • Detailed Description of the file associations
  • Command File which will be executed when you double click file with this extension
  • Mime Type of this extension (it is used by your browser to send or receive files with this extension)

Also if extension has more than one application associated with it File Extension Detective Will show all of them.
